  • Why do Oakland elected officials ignore their constituents pleas?

    August 29, 2024 6:59 PM

A common question people ask me face to face when I'm canvassing is why Oakland council members and the Mayor don't try increasing policing to reduce property crime to the levels of other cities.

  • Vote No on the Measure Z charter

    August 18, 2024 2:13 PM

Vote No on the charter measure replacing the expiring Measure Z public safety and anti-violence program parcel tax.

We need 1,200 well-managed police officers. We need the equivalent of SF's Measure E to loosen pursuit rules, reduce police time spent filling out duplicative oversight reports, and spend a lot more on drones and GPS darts to minimize pursuits.

  • It's a miracle there are still any retail stores in Oakland

    August 18, 2024 2:00 PM

Between rampant shoplifting and online competition, it's a miracle there are still any retail stores in Oakland.

Saturday, Betty and I went to McCaulou's Department Store in Montclair to buy a couple of pairs of Levi's 501s. We didn't see any on the racks, so the salesperson explained that she would have to retrieve them from the back room.

    August 16, 2024 2:03 PM

More Oakland election confusion. You might have seen online ads for SOS Oakland. It is an "independent expenditure committee" that is so completely independent of the candidates that its main organizer, longtime City Hall insider/real estate lobbyist Greg McConnell, didn't ask some of the candidates if it was okay to put them on the slate he's pushing.

As a result, Zac Unger (D1 City Council), a staunch supporter of Mayor Thao before and after she got elected by 670 RCV votes and opposed to both recalls, is on the same McConnell-run slate as Judge Brenda Harbin-Forte, the head of the Mayor Thao Recall, and LeRonne Armstrong, the police chief that Mayor Thao rashly fired.

  • Politico rebuttal re Phillip Dreyfuss

    August 15, 2024 2:08 PM

This is the most accurate and in-depth reporting on the Oakland political sea changes I've seen. The only minor error you made was referring to Isaac Abid as Phillip Dreyfuss's "Fellow developer and organizer."

That juxtaposition suggests Dreyfuss has an economic interest as an Oakland real estate developer, which he is not.

  • About the raid

    June 24, 2024 2:14 PM

What a strange, angry, inappropriate public response to the FBI, IRS, and USPS raid from Mayor Thao this morning.

Instead of simply stating her innocence, she attacked the FBI, hinting at dark forces behind the raid.
